Finding God in the Fight: A Marine's Story of Faith & Survival
Episode 4 of Wolves & Wisemen Reignited is a special Veterans Day episode centered around faith, military service, survival, mental health, and one Marine veteran's journey toward finding God in some of the darkest moments of his life.
Wolves & Wisemen Reignited — Episode 4
About This Episode
The guys are joined by Marine veteran Jason Esterbrook, who opens the episode with prayer before sharing his story—from a difficult childhood and the devastating accident that changed his family forever to anger, drugs, alcohol, and years of questioning why God allowed those things to happen.
Looking for direction and purpose, Jason eventually joined the United States Marine Corps. What began as an opportunity to change the direction of his life eventually placed him in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
While preparing for war, another Marine began talking to Jason about Jesus and sharing Scripture with him. Jason describes how those conversations slowly began breaking through years of anger until he ultimately accepted Jesus Christ while sitting in the Saudi Arabian desert.
Jason also shares a powerful experience he describes as a vision of Jesus leading him safely across a battlefield. That experience became especially meaningful as he entered combat carrying a weapon he says repeatedly malfunctioned.
During one battle, Jason recalls a mortar exploding only feet away from him. Others around him were injured, but Jason says he escaped without the shrapnel breaking his skin. For Jason, that moment became another reminder of the promise he believed God had already given him—that he wasn't alone and that God was still with him.
But surviving war didn't mean every battle was over.
Jason speaks openly about the struggles that followed his military service, including mental health, reaching a point where he considered taking his own life, and eventually realizing that talking about what he had experienced was an important part of healing. His message to anyone facing their own darkest moment is that their life still has value, they still have a purpose, and they don't have to carry everything alone.
The conversation also explores what "church" really means. Jason and the guys discuss their belief that a relationship with God isn't confined to a particular building or denomination. Sometimes church can simply be people gathering together, opening Scripture, sharing their experiences, supporting one another, and keeping God at the center of the conversation.
The episode also honors Veterans Day and the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps before returning to the familiar Wolves & Wisemen mix of the Rebel Report, Folks on Fire, Boners, humor, and The Fringe Files.
And this week's Fringe Files heads out to sea—and into the sky—with ghost ships, abandoned vessels, crews that seemingly vanished without explanation, mysterious aircraft, missing flights, and stories that leave behind more questions than answers.

Scripture From This Episode
Deuteronomy 20:1–4
This passage sets the foundation for Jason's story about war, fear, and trusting that God is with you even when the battle in front of you seems overwhelming.
The guys connect the passage with Jason's experiences as a young Marine preparing for combat during Desert Storm and the faith he discovered while deployed.
Deuteronomy 4:29
The second passage focuses on seeking God and finding Him when you search with your whole heart and soul.
Jason's story reflects that journey—from being angry with God and wanting little to do with faith to eventually finding the relationship with Jesus he says had been missing from his life.
“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Key Takeaways
Sometimes finding God happens in places you would never expect. Jason didn't describe finding his faith inside a traditional church. His relationship with Christ began while preparing for war in the Saudi Arabian desert.
Being angry with God doesn't necessarily mean your story with God is over. Jason spent years blaming God for what happened to his mother before eventually reaching a completely different place in his faith.
One person can have an enormous impact on someone else's life. A fellow Marine simply continued talking to Jason about Jesus and sharing Scripture with him. Those conversations eventually helped change the direction of Jason's life.
Faith doesn't mean fear disappears. Jason openly admits being afraid before combat. His faith gave him something to hold onto while facing that fear.
Pay attention to the moments that change your direction. Jason describes hearing his name when he was a teenager and later experiencing a vision while deployed. He believes those moments were God reaching him at different points in his life.
Your past doesn't have to determine the rest of your life. Addiction, anger, bad decisions, trauma, and mistakes can be part of someone's story without becoming the final chapter.
Surviving the battle doesn't mean the battle is finished. Coming home from war can bring an entirely different set of struggles, and mental health deserves the same seriousness as physical survival.
Talking about what you've been through can be part of healing. Jason explains that sharing his experiences has helped him work through things he once kept inside.
Your life can still have purpose during your darkest moments. Jason's story includes reaching a point where he considered ending his life, but his faith became part of what reminded him that his life still had meaning.
Church can be more than a building. The episode explores the idea that people gathering together to talk about God, study Scripture, share their struggles, and support one another can create genuine Christian fellowship.
Faith is a relationship, not simply a label. Jason emphasizes his desire for a personal relationship with Jesus rather than simply going through the motions of religion.
Everyone's struggle looks different. One of Jason's messages is that pain doesn't need to be compared. Military trauma, childhood trauma, loss, depression, or other struggles can affect people differently, and each person's experience deserves to be taken seriously.
Sometimes the unexplained leaves us with more questions than answers. From Jason's personal experiences of faith to the ghost ships and unexplained disappearances discussed later in the episode, not everything fits neatly into an easy explanation.
